Getting Teams on Windows

Visit microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-teams/download-app and click Download Teams. The installer is a small executable that downloads and installs the full application — you don't need administrator rights on a standard Windows machine. Once installed, Teams launches automatically and prompts you to sign in.

If your organisation uses Microsoft 365, sign in with your work email address (e.g. yourname@company.co.uk). Teams will authenticate against your Microsoft 365 account and load your organisation's workspace, channels and contacts automatically.

On Windows 11, Teams (the personal and work version) may already be present, but for business use you want the Microsoft Teams application with your work account, not the consumer version. If both appear, use the one labelled for work or school accounts.

Getting Teams on Mac

Download the PKG installer from the same Microsoft Teams download page. Open the downloaded file and follow the installation prompts. Teams installs to your Applications folder. On first launch, macOS will ask for permission to access your microphone, camera and screen — grant these for full meeting functionality.

Sign in with your Microsoft 365 work account. Teams for Mac is a Universal Binary, meaning it runs natively on both Intel Macs and Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3).

Getting Teams on iPhone (iOS)

Open the App Store and search for Microsoft Teams. The app is published by Microsoft Corporation — ensure you're downloading the official version. Tap Get to download and install. Once installed, sign in with your work Microsoft 365 account.

Teams on iOS supports meetings, chat, calling and file access. For joining scheduled meetings quickly, enable notifications when prompted — this ensures you receive meeting reminders and message alerts.

Getting Teams on Android

Open the Google Play Store and search for Microsoft Teams. Tap Install to download the app. Sign in with your work account after installation. The Android app has feature parity with the iOS version for day-to-day business use.

On some corporate Android devices managed with Microsoft Intune, Teams may already be pushed to the device automatically — check your app drawer before downloading manually.

Using Teams in a Web Browser (No Download Required)

If you'd prefer not to install anything, Teams is available at teams.microsoft.com in any modern browser. Sign in with your Microsoft 365 account. The web version supports chat, meetings and file access. Some features — including certain calling functions and background effects — are limited compared to the desktop app.

The browser version works well on Chromebooks or shared computers where installing software isn't practical. For regular daily use on your own device, the desktop app provides a better experience.

Does Teams Cost Anything to Download?

Downloading the Teams application is free on all platforms. The subscription cost comes from your Microsoft 365 licence, which determines what features you can access:

  • Free Teams account — available to anyone with a Microsoft account; includes basic chat and 60-minute group calls
  • Microsoft 365 Business Basic — £4.60/user/month — includes Teams with unlimited meetings, recording and 1TB OneDrive storage
  • Microsoft 365 Business Standard — £9.40/user/month — adds desktop Office apps, webinars and additional services

For most UK businesses, Business Basic provides everything needed for Teams as a collaboration platform. If you also need Word, Excel and PowerPoint installed on desktops, Business Standard or above is required.

What If Teams Won't Open After Installing?

On Windows, if Teams won't launch, try signing out of Windows and back in, or run Teams as administrator once. On Mac, check that Teams has the required macOS permissions (microphone, camera, screen recording) in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

If Teams opens but can't sign in, verify that your Microsoft 365 subscription is active and that your account hasn't been blocked in the admin centre. Your IT administrator can check licence assignment in the Microsoft 365 Admin portal.
