BT Fibre Checker for Business: Check Your Availability

The BT fibre checker lets you see which broadband speeds are available at your business address via the Openreach network. This guide explains how to use it, what the results mean, and why checking across multiple networks — not just BT — gives you the full picture of your connectivity options.

Before committing to a business broadband or leased line contract, one of the first things you need to establish is what connectivity technology is actually available at your specific premises. BT's online availability checker is one of the most widely used tools for this purpose — but it only shows availability on the Openreach network, which means it does not tell you the complete story.

How the BT Fibre Checker Works

BT's availability checker (available at bt.com/business) works by querying the Openreach infrastructure database for your postcode or full address. It returns information about which broadband technologies are available, the estimated speed range for your specific line, and whether FTTP (full fibre to the premises) has been deployed.

The checker typically shows:

  • Whether ADSL, FTTC or FTTP is available
  • Estimated download and upload speed ranges for FTTC based on your distance from the street cabinet
  • Whether FTTP (full fibre) is currently available or planned for your area

Understanding the Results

ADSL Available

If the checker only shows ADSL, your premises is not within range of a fibre street cabinet. ADSL delivers up to around 20Mbps download and 2Mbps upload, which is increasingly inadequate for modern business workloads. ADSL is primarily relevant now as an interim or failover technology. The checker result does not necessarily mean FTTC will never be available — cabinet upgrades continue in many areas.

FTTC Available

FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) is the most widely available fibre broadband technology in the UK. The speed shown in the checker is an estimate based on your line length from the cabinet — not a guarantee. Real-world speeds can vary. FTTC delivers between 40Mbps and 80Mbps download in most cases, with upload speeds of 8–20Mbps.

FTTP Available

If the checker shows FTTP availability, full fibre has been connected to your premises (or at least to your building). FTTP delivers symmetric or near-symmetric speeds with significantly better performance and reliability than FTTC. Business FTTP products from BT Business typically start at 150Mbps and reach 900Mbps on the Openreach network.

FTTP Coming Soon or Not Available

Where FTTP is shown as planned, Openreach has committed to building to your area within a stated timeframe. These timelines sometimes slip, so it is worth treating them as indicative rather than firm. If you need full fibre now and Openreach is not yet available, CityFibre or other altnet providers may have deployed infrastructure in your area independently.

The Limitation of Using the BT Checker Alone

The BT fibre checker only shows what is available on the Openreach network. It does not show:

  • CityFibre coverage (which is independent of Openreach and available in many UK towns and cities)
  • Virgin Media Business coverage
  • Independent altnet providers (Hyperoptic, Community Fibre, Trooli and others)
  • Leased line availability from any carrier

A business that checks the BT fibre checker and sees only FTTC available may actually have access to gigabit FTTP via CityFibre or another network at their specific address. Running an availability check across multiple networks simultaneously gives a much more complete picture.

How AMVIA Checks Availability

AMVIA runs availability checks across multiple carrier databases simultaneously, including Openreach, CityFibre, Virgin Media Business and a range of independent network providers. We also check leased line availability from a range of carriers in a single step. Rather than checking each network separately, you get a consolidated view of what is available at your address, along with pricing from each provider, in one request.

What to Do with Your Results

Once you know what is available at your address, the next step is matching the right technology to your actual requirements:

  • 1–10 staff with general office workloads: FTTC or lower-tier FTTP is usually sufficient
  • 10–30 staff or heavy cloud use: FTTP 300–500Mbps or bonded FTTC is appropriate
  • 30+ staff or mission-critical connectivity: FTTP 900Mbps or a dedicated leased line
